Digital Waste Tracking: What it means for you

Digital Waste Tracking Graphic

The way waste is tracked and recorded in the UK changed on 1st October 2026.

Digital waste tracking is being introduced by the UK, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish governments and their environmental regulators, to improve transparency, accountability and the way waste is monitored from collection to its final destination.

As a metal recycling and waste management business with multiple material recycling facilities that receive and process waste nationwide, we welcome developments that help make waste management more transparent, responsible and support a circular economy approach.

We also understand that changes to regulations can raise questions, so here is what you need to know:

What is digital waste tracking?

Digital waste tracking is a system designed to record and monitor waste movements electronically, creating a clearer picture of where waste comes from, who handles it and where it ultimately ends up.

By moving away from fragmented paper-based records towards digital information, the aim is to make waste movements easier to trace, improve record-keeping and help ensure waste is managed responsibly and in line with regulatory requirements.

Why is digital waste tracking being introduced?

Digital waste tracking is intended to bring several important benefits:

  • Greater transparency: Better visibility of waste movements and its journey through the waste management process.
  • Improved accountability: Clearer records of the businesses and organisations involved in handling waste.
  • Tackling waste crime: Making it harder for waste to be illegally dumped or handled by unauthorised operators.
  • Better data: Helping businesses, regulators and the wider industry understand how waste is managed and identify opportunities to improve recycling and resource recovery.
  • Simpler record-keeping: Digital records can reduce reliance on paper-based processes and make relevant information easier to access.

Ultimately, the goal is to support a more transparent, efficient and responsible waste management industry.

What does this mean for you as a customer?

The good news is that you do not need to take any action.

As a receiver of all types of waste, Ward is managing the requirements of digital waste tracking on your behalf, taking care of the relevant processes and arrangements associated with your waste collections.

You can continue to arrange and manage your waste collections as usual. There is no need to change your existing collection arrangements because digital waste tracking is being introduced.

What is the timescale for digital waste tracking?

It is being rolled out in two phases. Phase 1 comes into force from 1st October 2026, when receivers of waste have to keep records of all waste collected and submit these digitally to Department for Farming and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and the Environment Agency (EA).

By Autumn 2027, following a period of consultation, Phase 2 will become mandatory and every commercial business will have to evidence that their individual waste has been collected by an accredited and legal waste management company

How is Ward managing digital waste tracking?

Ward is keeping up to date with the latest requirements and have set up reporting processes to digitally record all waste that comes into any of our sites and submit this to DEFRA and the EA in line with the legislation requirements.
