Ward works with Ibstock to deliver continuous improvement in waste management

ibstock waste managment

Project summary

When the UK’s biggest manufacturer of clay and concrete building products, Ibstock put its waste management out to tender for all of its sites nationally, Ward won the contract for the Midlands and Northern depots.

Ward already had a long-term contract to carry out waste management locally for Ibstock, at its head office in Leicestershire and its Ellistown factory. Ward provides waste containers ranging from 240 ltr wheelie bins up to 40 yard Roll On Roll Offs and carries out complete waste disposal on behalf of the firm.

The challenge

Since winning the contract Ward has introduced a number of brand new initiatives at Ibstock, including a an innovative recycling scheme.  Ward also provides compaction services, wheelie bins and has introduced site surveys for Ibstock’s 25 Midlands and Northern sites, as far as Newcastle.

Account manager, Liz Meakin, said: “We have implemented a recycling scheme as Ibstock didn’t have one in place. Before, the general waste was being separated from other material, such as wood and broken bricks and being put into skips. Now they have a scheme for mixed recycling such as paper, cardboard and plastic bottles. This will provide a significant cost saving for the company.”

Ibstock, which operates in the UK and US, has a number of sub-divisions including Forticrete, Supreme and Ibstock Kevington. As part of the Ibstock contract, Ward has gained around six new sites locally, including a new factory that is being built in Ibstock, a site in Burton and one in Dorket Head.

The outcome

Winning this large contract is proof that Ward is leading the way when it comes to waste management.

Liz said: “Winning the tender has been massive and we haven’t finished yet. We were up against some well-known national companies so this is great for Ward.”

Speaking about why Ibstock chose Ward for its waste management, Nicola Dobbs, Category Manager at Ibstock, said: “As a business we wanted to ensure that we awarded the most suitable contractor that has the ability to meet the requirements and future objectives of our business and continue to improve our greener capabilities year after year.

“We wanted to ensure that our Factories’ requirements were met and regular visits are scheduled for Continuous Improvement. With Ward we have a Waste Management partner that can help us meet our recycling objectives and significantly reduce our waste to landfill.”
