In brief

For almost a decade, Ward has worked with Derbyshire Constabulary to support its work in cleaning up the community.

At the start, we began offering a collection, removal and destruction service following drug raids. As our relationship has developed, we’ve expanded our range services become a trusted partner in the safe destruction of several items associated with serious crime and providing waste management services to police stations around Derbyshire.

Rapid response

We offer a 24/7 rapid response service to dispose of the findings from drug raids. Due to the nature of the operations, we cannot be given any notice or warning, so operate a four hour response window to remove, collect and dispose of or recycle the materials found. These requests are sporadic and unpredictable, so the team has to react to each unique set of circumstances.

The police force covers a large geographical area and requires a trusted partner to help securely dispose of numerous specialist items and seized goods such as guns, knives, illegal car parts, mini mopeds and ammunition. Around three years ago, Ward started to manage the destruction of firearms and knives following fire and gun amnesties. All firearms and ammunition need to be certified as safe. Ward has to stop the regular processing system, fragmentise the guns and escort the police to the picking belt so that they can confirm that the guns can no longer be used. This is fully supervised by armed police to ensure safe disposal of things like crossbows, firearms and air rifles to confirm that the items have been crushed, destroyed and cannot be recovered.

As time has gone on, we started to supply roll on and roll offs and skips for general waste management across its Derbyshire police stations in Derby, Derby South and Erewash, as well as Chesterfield, North East Derbyshire, Bolsover, High Peak, Derbyshire Dales and Amber Valley, including Ripley, Belper and Alfreton amongst others. In March 2018 we also rolled out wheelie bins to their headquarters and localised stations after being awarded the Trade Waste Contract.

As a key customer for Ward, we continue to build a partnership with Derbyshire Constabulary to cater to its very specialist waste management needs.

Keeping our community safe

“We are keen to continue supporting the great work they do in keeping our community safe. We’ve developed a service for the destruction of police uniforms including boots, helmets, kevlar vests as they have a limited lifespan and need to be securely disposed of so that they cannot be re-used or traced. These can go through the fragmentiser where the cars go so there is remnants left. We’ve got a great partnership and we want to keep building on that.”
