Night Fitter
Location: Ilkeston – Griffon Road
Reporting to: Frag Manager
Shift: Monday to Friday, 16:00 – 01:00
Pay: £16.50 per hour
Overtime: Time and a half paid after 40 hours per week
Night Allowance: £20 per shift
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Night Fitter to join our established Ward site at Ilkeston (Griffon Road). The role supports the ongoing maintenance and reliability of the site’s frag and associated heavy plant operations.
Working the evening and night shift, you will play a critical role in ensuring plant uptime, responding to breakdowns efficiently, and carrying out planned preventative maintenance to minimise operational disruption during core production hours.
This is a hands-on mechanical maintenance role requiring strong fault-finding capability, sound technical judgement, and the ability to work independently during night operations. You will report directly to the Frag Manager and work closely with the site operations team.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on frag plant and associated equipment
- Diagnose and repair mechanical faults efficiently to minimise downtime
- Respond promptly to breakdowns during shift hours
- Inspect plant and identify wear, damage, or potential failure points
- Repair and replace components including bearings, shafts, conveyors, hydraulics, motors and drive systems
- Support plant optimisation and continuous improvement initiatives
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and job documentation
- Identify critical spare parts requirements and communicate proactively
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping within maintenance areas
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Work strictly in accordance with site Health & Safety policies
- Follow lock-out / tag-out procedures when working on machinery
- Adhere to safe systems of work at all times
- Report hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately
- Support compliance with environmental permits and operational standards
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Proven experience as a Mechanical Fitter within heavy industry, recycling, aggregates or manufacturing
- Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting capability
- Experience working on heavy plant and rotating machinery
- Good working knowledge of hydraulics and mechanical drive systems
- Ability to prioritise breakdown response in a production-critical environment
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently on nights
Desirable
- Welding and fabrication experience
- Experience within metal recycling or frag/shredder environments
- Knowledge of structured PPM systems
